Hi, I'm Toshi!
I'm a Japanese home cook living in Kyushu, the southern island of Japan, and this is where I share the real meals I cook for my wife on weekends.
Why I Cook on Weekends
My wife takes care of our weekday meals — she makes bento lunch boxes and dinner every day after work. So on weekends, it's my turn to cook for her. It's my way of saying thank you.
How I Learned to Cook
I started cooking when I was a university student living on my own for the first time. Nobody taught me — I learned by trial and error, following recipes online and figuring things out in my tiny kitchen. That self-taught spirit is still how I cook today.
What You'll Find Here
This blog is about real Japanese home cooking — not restaurant-style dishes or complicated recipes, but the kind of food Japanese families actually eat at home.
Here's what I love to cook:
- Japanese comfort food — miso soup, nikujaga, ginger pork, gyudon, and more
- Pasta dishes — Japanese-style pasta is one of my specialties
- Dashi packet recipes — I use dashi packets all the time. They make authentic Japanese flavors easy and accessible
- Electric pressure cooker meals — I'm a big fan of kitchen gadgets that save time without sacrificing flavor
My Kitchen Philosophy
I believe cooking doesn't have to be complicated. With a few essential Japanese pantry items (miso, soy sauce, mirin, and good dashi packets), you can create delicious, authentic meals in about an hour — including a main dish, soup, and side dishes.
Why This Blog?
There are many Japanese recipe sites out there, but most are written from a professional or textbook perspective. I wanted to show what a regular Japanese guy actually cooks at home — the everyday meals that don't always look perfect but always taste like home.
If you're curious about what Japanese people really eat, or you want to try making Japanese home cooking in your own kitchen, you're in the right place.
Welcome to my weekend kitchen.
